Years ago, when I owned a Beechcraft Bonanza A36TC, I would experiment to see just how fast it could go. One day, due to a huge tailwind and what I like to believe was a finely dialed-in configuration, I exceeded 220 knots (or 250 mph) of ground speed, which is significantly higher than the 150 to 160 knots I typically reached without a tailwind.
Why was I interested in flying fast? First, who doesn’t love the thrill of going fast? But the bigger reason was that getting to my destination to spend time with friends and family was the goal, not flying. In technology, the goal of going fast is largely driven by a need to find answers or even insights into the many questions we have.
Now, imagine a world fueled by cutting-edge technology that propels AI applications to unprecedented heights. This vision became a reality during a recent demonstration when we connected a Broadcom switch and a Micron PCIe Gen6 SSD to an AMD X870 system running FIO (a flexible I/O tester tool).
Our mission? To showcase the performance of PCIe Gen6 technology. And we delivered, illustrating the amazing interoperability of Micron's SSDs with Broadcom's PCIe switch. How fast did we go? Over 28 GB/s, setting another record for the world’s fastest PCIe Gen6 SSD demo.
Achieving performance metrics that wow
Let’s dive into the numbers that made jaws drop:
- Sequential writes: 12.5 GB/s
- Sequential reads: Over 28 GB/s
- Random reads: 5.5 million IOPs
Can we all just take in those numbers and say, “Wow!” This remarkable performance highlights our combined solutions' lightning speed, underscoring their potential to power AI applications. This demo showcases the long-standing and successful collaboration between Micron and Broadcom, driven by each company’s expertise and commitment to leading-edge solutions.
Are you having a hard time believing those numbers? Take a look for yourself!
Collaborating across the industry
The work done together on this project has set the groundwork for a future enabled by PCIe Gen6 solutions, including SSDs, PCIe switches, CPUs and even GPUs. This demo reinforces themes in Broadcom's recent press release, “Broadcom extends PCIe industry leadership with end-to-end Gen 6 portfolio for AI infrastructure,” and the insightful blog, “The PCIe® Gen6 ecosystem is taking off!” by Jeremy Werner, senior vice president and general manager of Micron’s Storage Business Unit.
Jeremy’s words resonate in a market thirsting for faster storage and solutions that work together. He says, “Our success in the PCIe Gen6 ecosystem is not a solitary achievement. It results from a collaborative effort with industry leaders like Broadcom and Teledyne LeCroy. Together, we have successfully validated our PCIe Gen6 solutions with the latest pre-compliance test suite to ensure rapid maturity of interoperability.”
Pushing boundaries together
This demo vividly illustrates the power of collaboration in driving innovation. Together, Micron and Broadcom continue to push boundaries, achieving milestones that redefine what’s possible in the realm of technology.
Join us as we march forward to realize the potential of our revolutionary storage solutions and pave the way for a future where data-intensive workloads are met with peak-performance storage.
