Micron's planned $15 billion investment in Boise, Idaho leading-edge memory fab

Micron announced the multi-billion-dollar expansion of its Boise Campus, which will create approximately 2,000 direct jobs with Micron and an additional 15,000 jobs in the community over the next decade. Micron is committed to continued investment in local workforce development, partnerships with local colleges and K-12 STEM education.

About the project

Micron is pleased to be moving forward with plans to invest approximately $15 billion through the end of the decade to construct a new fab for leading-edge memory manufacturing in Boise, Idaho. This will bring memory manufacturing back to the Boise site, will be the first new memory manufacturing fab built in the U.S. in 20 years and represents the largest private investment made in Idaho. The Boise manufacturing investment is part of our strategy to increase U.S.-based DRAM production to 40% of our global output in the next decade.

Micron’s project is aligned with the goals of the CHIPS and Science Act Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to enhance U.S. economic and national security by securing a leading edge in critical technologies and rebuilding a highly complex but critical manufacturing sector in the U.S.

In Idaho, the grants and tax credits will support the lab-to-fab, fab-to-lab goals. The co-location of manufacturing with R&D will allow the U.S. to maintain a critical advantage in leading-edge technology for next-generation memory technology innovation.

Idaho Community Investment Framework

Micron understands that robust community investments are critical to building the diverse, highly skilled workforce of the future that can sustain leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing and U.S. technology leadership. In support of Micron’s Idaho expansion efforts, Micron has established the Idaho Community Investment Framework, which reflects the shared priorities Micron and its partners have identified to lead inclusive growth across the state. The Idaho Community Investment Framework was announced alongside the State of Idaho and the City of Boise, longtime advocates of state and local efforts to bolster the success of new manufacturing in Idaho.

The Community Investment Framework will guide Micron’s efforts to cultivate the talent pipeline and enrich the communities where its team members live and work by focusing on three key elements: building the workforce of the future, investing in STEM education for all and engaging with local communities. Micron plans to invest $75 million over the next 10 years toward the priorities formalized in the Framework.

Micron is working toward effective and creative workforce development solutions to make careers in the semiconductor industry accessible to all, particularly individuals in underrepresented and underserved communities, including rural communities. Among other efforts, we’ll prioritize workforce training partnerships, continue our longstanding efforts to expand inclusive hiring, explore options for improvements to transportation and housing in the Treasure Valley, and provide the option of onsite childcare for Boise team members.

STEM education in K-12 through post-secondary education, as well as training programs, are essential in creating a skilled talent pipeline to fuel U.S. workforce needs. Micron looks forward to investing in statewide education programs, from helping to develop semiconductor curriculum for high schoolers, to providing college students with experiential learning opportunities.

Micron is committed to working with our community partners to understand the impact the semiconductor manufacturing expansion will have on the surrounding community infrastructure and needed improvements. Micron will focus on economic development and continuing to provide community support through giving of charitable dollars and promoting volunteer opportunities.
